Diplodia tip blight and needlecast are two fungal diseases that can affect your pine trees. Diplodia tip blight can be a devastating disease to pines, especially when a tree is already under stress. This fungus invades the tree and causes a reduction of growth and branch dieback. The tree’s needles turn brown prematurely and small black fruiting pustules can be observed in infected trees. Diplodia tip blight commonly affects Austrian, mugho, red, and Scots pine.
On the other hand, needlecast is a fungal disease presenting mostly in the Eastern white pine and Macedonian white pine. Symptoms begin to appear in the late summer months when the current season’s needles begin to appear with a reddish-brown hue. In the spring, these needles curl and turn tan or gray. Needlecast is a relatively new disease to Connecticut.
