Arborvitae trees are at risk for damage from the arborvitae leafminer pest. Adult insects are small silvery-gray moths present from mid-May to mid-July. Many homeowners easily confuse damage from the arborvitae leafminer with winter injury, as symptoms can appear similarly. Affected leaves turn brown and become brittle. Defoliation can also occur as a result of infection. To inspect your trees for infestation, examine the tips of branches during April for brown leaves and look for small larvae.
