Did you know?
The Southern Pine Beetle, previously thought to only reside in the southeastern United States, poses a threat to Connecticut’s pine trees. Connecticut is home to the eastern white pine, pitch pine, Scotch pine, Austrian pine, and Japanese black pine trees. These beetles have been found mostly in Connecticut on Scotch, red, and pitch pines.
One sign of Southern Pine Beetle infestation is blue-stained bark. Tree bark becomes infected by a blue fungus from the beetle. The fungus helps to feed the beetle’s larvae, but in turn, starves the tree of nutrients.
