Gypsy moth outbreaks, a major culprit of tree infestation in Connecticut, are worse following a drought. In the late 1980’s a fungus reappeared in the state that attacks the gypsy moth caterpillars and keeps outbreaks to a minimum. However, the fungus needs rain to become activated. During dry seasons in Connecticut, the gypsy moth life cycle is not kept in check by the fungus and Connecticut’s trees become subject to blight from gypsy moth infestation. Gypsy moths primarily attack oak trees, but can also pose a threat to most other hardwoods.
